Alaska Highway book wins heritage education award

Julie Harris’s work on Signposts & Promises: Canada and the Alaska Highway published by the Fort St. John North Peace Museum has won the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals’ Award of Excellence in the Heritage Education, Awareness & Scholarship category.

The Alaska Highway Community Society and the Fort St. John North Peace Museum strongly supported the writing and publication of Signposts & Promises. The project was made possible through a BC-Canada 150 grant that covered basic publishing costs, while historian Julie Harris volunteered her time to write most of the sections in the book, with contributions from Frank B. Edwards.

Signposts & Promises: Canada and the Alaska Highway brings all aspects of the Alaska Highway’s cultural landscape, history and natural heritage to life. It features a rich collection of images, which took Julie Harris many weeks of time to select, secure rights, and caption.

Images include recent ones taken by professional photographers as well as historic images from the Smithsonian Archives, the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Library and Archives Canada, the Yukon Archives, and the Fort St. John North Peace Museum, and others.

Signposts and Promises is available at the museum. Click here to read an excerpt.
