Charlie Lake Deputy Fire Chief Ron Schildroth received the Governor General’s Fire Services Exemplary Medal on Friday, December 13.
The medal honours Canadian firefighters who have completed 20 years of service, and have shown exemplary service through good conduct, efficiency, and industry.
Schildroth began working as a volunteer firefighter in Listowel, Ontario, in 1998 before pursuing a full-time career. He came to Charlie Lake in 2018 from North Perth, Ont.
“With the support of his family, Ron applied for jobs all around the country, venturing so far many would say he was lost,” said Brad Sperling, chair of the regional district board, with a laugh.
“Lucky for us, he soon found Charlie Lake Fire Department, where he started as deputy fire chief on September 10, 2018. Since then, Ron’s experience and organization skills have been a tremendous asset to the Charlie Lake fire department and the entire Peace River Regional District.
“Ron is someone everyone can depend on, whether you need a laugh, gentle encouragement, or a bit of tough love," Sperling continued. "A true teacher, one of Ron’s strengths is knowing how to bring the best out of others and lending a helping hand when needed.”
