Federal student loan payments have been deferred for the next six months in light of the crisis. The College has also forgiven rent for the month of April for any students living on residence.

NLC President and CEO Dr. Bryn Kulmatycki expressed concern for international students, who aren’t eligible for subsidy programs announced by the federal government for Canadians.

“What we’ve done is make this funding for anyone who’s having difficulties right now,” said Kulmatycki, noting students only need to fill out some paperwork to access the funding. "There’s a lot of students who have lost their jobs, they have no income."

On Thursday, the Ministry of Advanced Education announced $3.5 million in emergency financial assistance for post-secondary students. The ministry says it is working directly with public post-secondary institutions to ensure emergency assistance is provided for international and out-of-province students.
