Fire ban in effect starting Saturday

Spring is here at last, and if you want to celebrate with fireworks, tonight's your last chance.

The BC Wildfire Service will be banning Category 2 open fires in the Fort St. John, Fort Nelson, and Dawson Creek fire zones effective at noon on Saturday, May 5.

The ban applies to fireworks, burn barrels, open burning of any material (piled or unpiled) smaller than two metres high and three metres wide, and stubble or grass fires over an area smaller than 2,000 square metres.

Caetgory 2 fires are also banned in Hudson's Hope, the district announced Friday.

The bans do not apply too Category 3 fires or campfires that are a half-metre high by a half-metre wide or smaller, or to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes.

The BC Wildfire Service says it is implementing these prohibitions to help prevent wildfires sparked by Category 2 burns, due to dry and windy conditions in the forecast. These prohibitions will remain in place until the public is otherwise notified.

Anyone found in violation of the prohibition could be fined $1,150, and face a $100,000 fine or jail time if convicted in court.

If a violation causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire or open burning violation, call 1-800-663-5555, or *5555 on a cellphone.
