Flood warning remains in place for Liard; rising levels begin to ease

Less precipitation in the forecast for the coming week

A flood warning remains in place for the Liard River and its tributaries. Levels, in some cases, have begun to drop.

A flood warning by the River Forecast Centre for the Liard River remained in place Monday morning, but for the first time in more than two weeks, flows and river levels actually stopped their sharp rise.

As of 5:20 a.m. Monday, the Lower Crossing automated station on the Liard recorded a provisional flow of 7930 cubic metres per second, down from Saturday afternoon's 8230 m3/s.

Flows on the upper section of the river continued to maintain a relatively steady pace Saturday and Sunday.

At 6:15 Monday morning, an automated station upstream had measured a provisional flow of 3030 m3/s.

A combination of melting snow pack and localized thunderstorms in the area last week pushed capacities, in some cases, to 20-plus year levels.

On June 1, the snow pack in the Peace Region was 161% of normal.

It's not known what it might be in the Liard region, as the far northeast and northwest sections of the province aren't monitored.

Other than a risk of thunderstorms over the southern sections of the Fort Nelson region Monday, the forecast appears to be for a drying trend moving into this week.

Daytime temperatures aren't expected to rise much above the mid 20's.
