Last year’s Oktoberfest celebrations brought in over 500 people.

If you’re hoping to get into the spirit of Oktoberfest this weekend but can’t afford a trip to Germany, you’re in luck if you live in Fort Nelson.

On Saturday, the Fort Nelson Community Literacy Society (FNCLS) and their partners are putting on the annual Oktoberfest – but as with last year, it won’t just be limited to German culture, as attendees will get to sample many of the different cultures that make up the northern community.

The day will feature three events: a cultural festival from 1 to 4 p.m., followed by live dancing entertainment from 6:30 to 8:30 at the recreation centre.

After that, Dan’s Pub is putting on an international beer night to go along with the theme.

The cultural festival is a way for people who aren’t from the area to showcase their culture.

“You can try different food from different countries, talk to people, learn about where they’re from, or play some different games. Some people dress up in their traditional garb,” said Seanah Blair, the executive director of FNCLS.

“Basically the purpose is to cultivate togetherness and bring newcomers and immigrants together with the local cultures, showcase Aboriginal and First Nations cultures and just promote diversity in general.”

The live entertainment portion of the day will see local talent as well as a dance troupe from Vancouver that specializes in dances from all over the world.

Finally, thirsty participants can go to Dan’s Pub for international beers.

“They’ve got the staff dressed up in the German lederhosen, they’ve got international beers. They just kind of take it and run with it,” said Blair. “It’s our way to reach that demographic that’s really hard to reach.”

Blair said over 500 people came to the first Oktoberfest event last year.
