On April 28, 2021 at approximately 3:15 PM, Northern Rockies RCMP and Emergency Services responded to a single vehicle collision on Highway 97 near kilometre 735, north of Muncho Lake, BC.
RCMP and Emergency Services departed Fort Nelson for the 300 kilometre trip to the scene. Upon arrival it was determined that a northbound vehicle, a Honda CRV with US plates, with two occupants had left the roadway, rolled and came to a stop on the edge of the Trout River. Witnesses were able to get the two occupants to safety and began performing life-saving techniques on the female passenger who subsequently passed away. The male driver, other than being cold and wet, sustained only minor injuries.
Further investigation determined that the man and woman, both in their sixties, were United States citizens and in the process of legally transitioning to their primary residence in Alaska from south of the Canada-USA border.
BC Highway Patrol in Fort Nelson and the BC Coroners’ Service have assumed conduct of this investigation to determine the cause. Anyone with information about this collision, including any dashboard camera video, is asked to call BCHP in Fort Nelson at 250-774-3883, citing file 2021-1010.
