Road washout near YK border

Highway 97 closed; alternate route through Northwest BC
highway 97 washout
A section of Highway 97 south of the Yukon border has been closed due to a washout. The landslide has closed the route to traffic in both directions. There is no indication, at this point, when it might re-open.

A section of the Alaska Highway south of the Yukon border has been closed until further notice after a significant washout.

According to Drive BC, the highway has been closed from 377 to 415 kilometres north of Fort Nelson due to pooling, however, photos from Yukon 511 (the territory's equivalent to Drive BC) show an actual washout.

A wildfire just south of the slide, near Coal River, had already put motorists on alert that the highway might be closed on a moment's notice.

The next update is scheduled for noon Saturday.

Drive BC indicates there is no available detour, however, travellers wanting to get back into our region have the choice of using the much-longer Highway 37 alternative which takes them through Dease Lake and south to Highway 16 east of Terrace.
