Three new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the Northern Health region on Monday.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said there were a total of 131 new cases reported in B.C. since Friday's update. The total number of cases in the province rose to 4,065, while the number in northern B.C. rose to 96.

Across the province there were 445 active cases, Henry said, including nine people in hospital – three in critical care. There were no new deaths linked to COVID-19 over the weekend, leaving the province's death toll from the pandemic at 195.

According to data released by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, there were 12 active cases in the Northern Health region on Monday. None of those people were hospitalized, and there have been no deaths linked to COVID-19 in the north.

Henry said the province has seen a number of community exposure events, especially among young adults attending parties or other social gatherings.

"We need to do better collectively to stop these events of exposure," Henry said. "Parties and gatherings of young people are a concern, even if it is less than 50 people."

As B.C. schools are preparing for students to return, keeping the level of cases circulating in communities low is critical, she said.

"This virus is going to be with us," Henry said. "We need to manage it, and give our children what they need. We need to do our bit over the next few weeks, because of the importance of that in-class learning, so that schools can reopen in each community."
