WorkSafeBC has fined a Penticton-based company more than $57,000 for what it called high-risk safety violations at a gravel crushing plant in Hudson’s Hope.

WorkSafe said Tuesday it fined Cantex-Okanagan Construction Ltd. on Feb. 8 after an inspection while the plant was undergoing maintenance, and “observed areas where guarding was not present or ineffective.”

According to WorkSafe, workers in one area were observed in proximity to equipment that had not been locked out.

“The firm failed to ensure that machinery or equipment was locked out before maintenance work began, and failed to ensure machinery and equipment were fitted with adequate safeguards to prevent workers from accessing hazardous points of operation," WorkSafe stated.

"The firm also failed to ensure jaw and cone crushers were equipped with effective mechanical exhaust systems. These were all high-risk violations."

The total fine issued was $57,318.16.
