A Hudson’s Hope man has been sentenced to house arrest after being caught vandalizing a Pacific Canbriam Energy site, along with possessing three stolen firearms and a truck.

Justin Marshall Thibault, 26, pleaded guilty Monday morning in Fort St. John provincial court to driving without due care or attention, mischief, and possession of stolen property over $5,000.

Court heard that on May 25, 2020, Thibault and his common-law partner Tessa Broad were caught on video cutting fuel tank locks at a Pacific Canbriam Energy well site by two employees. The pair got back in Thibault's white pickup truck and attempted to ram the employees’ two vehicles once confronted.

RCMP were given Thibault’s description by the employees, and police found him two weeks later on June 10 when they searched his residence in Farrell Creek, discovering a stolen truck and three stolen firearms. During the same arrest and seizure, officers confiscated a caged black bear cub and additional stolen property.

Thibault was fined $2,000 and handed a 12-month driving ban for the reckless driving, and will serve two nine-month concurrent conditional sentences for the stolen property and mischief. Broad will be processed by the court at a late date.

It’s not the first time Thibault has come up against the law, having already been fined for $4,750 for illegally hunting with a spotlight in November 2017, and harassing an elk by river boat in 2019.
