MP Zimmer to donate pay raise to local church

MP Bob Zimmer says he will be donating an automatic and legislated increase in his salary to a local church.

The 2.1% pay increase comes into effect for all MPs today, increasing base salaries by just over $3,750 to $182,656.

The pay increase is automatic under legislation passed in 2005.

“While individual Members of Parliament cannot stop the pay raise from going forward, we can decide what to do with the money we receive," Zimmer said in a statement.

“I know people throughout the region are hurting right now which is why I am donating any increase I receive to a local church that is helping out our community during this difficult time. I will continue to support local charities as I always have.”

Zimmer did not specify which church would receive the funds.

He said the pay legislation came into effect before he became MP, and said he has never voted for a pay raise since being elected in 2011.

“It is up to the government to bring forward legislation to make changes to the annual increase should they do so when the House of Commons resumes sitting again," Zimmer said.

“Following the global economic downturn in 2008, it was the previous Conservative government that put in place an MP pay freeze that lasted for three years."
