No fall fair this year

The North Peace Fall Fair has been cancelled for this year, though organizers hope to host some kind of event to celebrate the region’s farming roots.

Fair organizers made the decision to cancel Tuesday, a tough one after three months of debate of how to plan and host the event during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the gradual easing of public health restrictions.

“We feel bad that after 73 years that we have to cancel for this year, but we’ll be back next year as good, if not better,” said Bruce Christensen, president of the fall fair society.

Organizers hope to host a community picnic of sorts sometime this summer or fall instead, which would be much smaller and fit within provincial orders on mass gatherings.

“We really believe that the fall fair is a glue that keeps the people together. There are people who have been going to the fair for 70-some years,” said Christensen.

“To us it’s an important part of life in the North Peace.”
