Safe sex during pandemic

It's not every day that the government recommends the use of glory holes. But these are unprecedented times.

Sex during a global pandemic can be risky business, but the BC Centre for Disease Control has provided some helpful tips for those looking to get down.

Earlier this year, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry told the province that it's not the time to be “serial dating.”

“Pick somebody, see if it works, and then take your time,” she said. “Decide whether this is somebody that you want to include into your bubble, into your space.”

But the BCCDC has gone into a bit more detail about best practices for those who decide to take the plunge with a new partner.

In a post on the organization's website, the BCCDC recommends avoiding face-to-face contact and kissing during sex.

“Choose sexual positions that limit face-to-face contact," the organization says. "Use barriers, like walls (e.g., glory holes), that allow for sexual contact but prevent close face-to-face contact."

Wearing a mask during sex can also help stop the transmission of the disease, while the BCCDC also recommends washing your body with soap and water before and after can also help.

Keeping your number of sexual partners low is key, as is communication with your partner(s) about the precautions you and your partner are taking to stay safe.

But when it comes down to it, the BCCDC says you are your safest sex partner, and masturbation will not spread COVID-19.
