Community orchard planned for Taylor

A new project is in the works to plant a community orchard and demonstration garden in Taylor.

Ashlee Kirschner and Joleen Morrison introduced the idea to councillors Monday night as they start to seek out grants to fund the project. The Peace Community Church has already donated space next to the church to host the garden.

"Something that's been a dream of mine is to have a community orchard and garden, just a place where people can come," Kirschner said.

The orchard and garden are still being designed, but the two envision a social hub home to vegetable patches and fruit trees, a gazebo and picnic benches, and a space where residents can meet and take in community events.

A key goal is to teach residents about food security, Morrison said. The garden will be about the size of a double lot, and will help showcase how residents can turn their yards into a mini grocery store.

"Hopefully it can really show how much stuff you can do on your own property, because a lot of people think, 'I cant do that,'" Morrison said.

The two have just begun to seek out grants for the project, with plans to plant the garden in 2020.
