BC Hydro will be conducting controlled burning of debris as part of the Site C project from Feb. 9 to 12 in the following locations:
South bank of the Peace River: Eastern end of the transmission line and Septimus temporary substation
North bank of the Peace River: Between Bear Flats and dam site
Cache Creek drainage area
Moberly River drainage area
"We are clearing vegetation, where practical, from the future reservoir area to help ensure boater safety and reduce impacts to dam operations," BC Hydro stated in public notice. "We are also clearing along the Highway 29 realignment right-of-way and transmission line corridor."
Merchantable timber will be taken to local mills, however, "our ability to sell the trees is based on factors such as size, species, and location. Recent closures of local mills have reduced the market for some of the trees we are clearing," Hydro said.
Leftover debris that impacts boater safety will be burned, bucked into short logs, chipped or mulched; some smaller trees will remain in the lower reaches and on steep slopes, Hydro said.
If you see an uncontrolled fire or forest fire, immediately contact the BC Wildfire Service at 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on a cell.
