Brayden Sims wins Golden Gloves title

Brayden Sims, of Fivestar Boxing Academy, is the 2018 B.C. Golden Gloves champion in the 60kg Jr. C. Open Male division after beating Jerome Leroyer of Inner City Gym by unanimous decision. It was the third time Sims has fought, and beaten, Leroyer, and it was an excellent return to form after Sim's performance at Canadian nationals.

"It feels awesome. I fought really good, and I knew it was going to end this way," said Sims.

Sims and Leroyer earned the Fight of the Night award, while Sims took home Best Youth Boxer as well. It was the most exciting fight of the evening, which featured 17 main card bouts, and four Fun Box fights in the prelims.

The only other title handed out on night one was to Travis Lesschaeve, fighting out of Warrior Strong, who beat Savard Boxing Club's Rhett Gibbons in the main event to take the 69kg Elite Open Male Golden Glove title. The fight was called after the referee deemed Gibbons unfit to continue after his third standing eight count of the fight.

Fivestar's two national silver medalists, Nick Young and Lincoln Pomeroy, fought exciting exhibitions Friday night, and will have meaningful fights on Saturday evening.

The other award handed out on the night, Best Jr. Boxer, went to Inner City Gym's "Irish" Oakley Fitzsimmons, for beating Zack Bower of Warrior Strong in a dominating but thrilling performance. Fitzsimmons, only 12, had some of the best footwork and movement of the night and has a lot of potential.

Other fights of note:

Eddie Scarfo of Fivestar lost by unanimous decision to Parker Klasson of Warrior Strong in the 52kg Jr. B Novice Male division.

Arlan Zarate of Fivestar fought an exhibition against Phillip Matombo of Cougar Boxing in the 60kg Youth Novice Male division.

Geoff Bullerwell of Fivestar beat Kane Campbell of Dawson Creek by unanimous decision in the 64kg Elite Novice Male division.

Nick Dragovich of Fivestar beat Kelly Gerk of 2 Rivers Boxing by unanimous decision in the 75kg Elite Novice Male division.

Murray MacDonald of Fivestar beat Fernando Asenio of Undisputed Boxing by unanimous decision in the 81kg Elite Novice Male division.

Justin MacKenzie of Fivestar lost to Reid Twobey of Cougar Boxing by unanimous decision in the 91kg Elite Novice Male division.

Night two goes Saturday evening. Prelim fights begin at 6:30 p.m. with the main card starting at 7:30 p.m.
