Canada East stuns U.S.A., to play for gold today

World Junior A Challenge fans will be treated to a special gold-medal matchup today between Canada East and Russia at the Encana Events Centre at 5 p.m. Despite going just 1-2-1 in the round robin, Canada withstood a 42-shot effort from the Americans in the semi-final yesterday afternoon and won 2-1 in a shootout. 

The Americans were undefeated (4-0) entering the game, and had previously beaten Canada East 7-3 in Fort St. John on December 11. Devon Levi stood on his head in net for the Canadians.

Facing them today are the Russians, who beat the Czech Republic 5-1 last night in the second semi-final. It was another upset, as the Czech team was 3-0-1 going into the game while Russia was 1-1-2. 

Canada East and Russia played each other in the first game of the tournament on December 7, a 3-2 Russian win in overtime. The Czech Republic and U.S.A. will play for bronze today at 12 p.m.
