Tuesday marked 10 years to the day of the grand opening of the Pomeroy Sport Centre on Oct. 13, 2010.
The Pomeroy Sport Centre has hosted many impressive competitions and events, including the 2020 B.C. Winter Games and numerous Canada Cup speed skating events. It reopened in September after being closed due to COVID-19.
Using the services in the Pomeroy this year has a different feel to it, just like it does at all public facilities around the area, with many new safety measures and protocols in place. However, the skating rinks are busy and in high demand, and the walking track and speed skating oval are open as well.
The City of Fort St. John held a virtual photo contest to celebrate, with merchandise and lunch deals taking place throughout the day to mark the occasion. A hot dog lunch was available in front of the building, with the walking track and skating rinks open for use during the day.
People sent in pictures to the city's Facebook page yesterday showing special memories that took place at the Sport Centre. The captured occasions include kids playing hockey, aunts teaching their nieceshow to skate, and running groups getting fit together.
