Crystal Cup Pond Hockey organizers found themselves in a position to give back to the community after the success of this year’s event, and have donated $2,000 each to the Sid Davis Hockey Scholarship Fund and the Darren Oftebro Memorial Bursary Fund.
“Sid Davis dedicated his life to hockey and coaching youth, and Darren Oftebro just loved hockey and was a great family guy. We thought they were two really good causes,” said Neil Evans.
The Sid Davis fund gives $1,000 to hockey players in both Fort St. John and Williams Lake to help them further their hockey playing and schooling at the post-secondary level.
The Darren Oftebro fund goes to NPSS students who are looking to get into a career in welding and other trades.
“Darren was a buddy of ours, and volunteered with us for years setting up the Crystal Cup site and playing on teams,” Evans said.
This is the first year that the Crystal Cup executive was able to give back to the community, and something Evans said they are hoping to continue annually.
“We wanted to give back. We’ve been blessed with a great turnout and were able to do something special for some great causes,” Evans said.
