Fallyn Mills, Wade Roberts win all around at Williams Lake rodeo

With three straight weekends of rodeo, the B.C. High School Rodeo Association’s North Region is inching closer to provincials and national finals. The North and South Region competed together in a rodeo in Williams Lake May 5 and 6.

Fallyn Mills of Pink Mountain had a monster weekend, earning 102.5 all around points, and extending her lead to 105 points over Hanna Pederson. Wade Roberts of Charlie Lake won the boys all around with 44 points in Williams Lake, but is second to Ben Jackson by 60 points.

In Williams Lake, Mills won the break away roping event on both days, as well as both girls cutting events and the team roping event on Saturday with roping partner Kolton Johnson.

“I think this year is a lot better for me. I feel really confident heading into finals, and it feels good to be on top, but it isn’t easy. There’s a tough group of competitors for the girls all around this year,” Mills said.

Her goal is to finish the season first in the all around, and earn the 120 points that she can carry with her into the B.C. Provincial High School Finals in Merritt, May 30 to June 3. From there, she hopes to perform well in all seven events and win the provincial girls all around title.

“The all around is about being competitive in every event, not necessarily just winning. My expectations are to come out on top at finals. But I’ll just take it one event at a time and hope it comes out good,” she said.

Mills had a disappointing end to the season last year, where she finished fourth in the all around at provincials and lost a horse along the way. This year, she has been more focused, and said her horses and her winters spent in Arizona have really helped, as has having a good roping partner in Johnson.

“It’s a lot of work to stay on top. You need a lot of focus and the top girls definitely do. It’s a challenge.”

Before the provincials, the North Region has two more weekends of rodeo. First is the cutting and reined cowhorse event in Pouce Coupe May 13. Then, the seniors will have two days of rodeo at Hudson’s Hope, during the junior provincials, May 19 and 20. The juniors will also compete those two days, as well as on May 21.

Winning the all around cowboy award in Williams Lake was Tyler Pederson with 68 points, and Rylie Bondaroff of Arras was the all around cowgirl with 63 points. Bondaroff leads the girls all around standings by 30 points over Twiggy Esau, while Pederson leads Jesse Jones by 88 points in the junior boys standings.
