Halfway River Rodeo cancelled

Fans of the annual Halfway River Valley Roundup Rodeo will have to wait another year, after the Halfway River First Nation cancelled the 2020 rodeo Monday. The 2020 rodeo, scheduled for August 21 to 23, would have been the 19th edition of the popular event.

"We just made the decision to take care of our elders and membership, there's a lot of uncertainty still around COVID-19 and we want to take care of ourselves and everyone who would come to the rodeo," said organizer Jeff Metecheah.

Metecheah said they will regroup and plan for a great rodeo in 2021.

"It's disappointing for sure, I like seeing my friends and watching the bucking horses and bulls, but what do you do. It is what it is and hopefully things get better for everyone," Metecheah said.

The cancellation follows Doig River First Nation's decision to cancel its 2020 rodeo on April 24.
