North Peace girls win gold, boys take silver at home basketball tournament

The NPSS Grizzlies almost had a gold-medal sweep at the New Year's Classic Junior Volleyball Tournament in Fort St. John on Saturday. The North Peace girls went undefeated on way to beating PGSS 55-30 in the final. The girls beat PGSS 63-32 earlier in the round robin, and though the final was a closer game throughout, the Grizzlies came up big when it counted.

Alyssa Gallant and Sophia De-Torres were the stars for NPSS, scoring 19 and 10 points respectively. However, it was the team's solid cohesive play and ball movement that put them over the top.

The NPSS boys, who were also undefeated in the round robin, played a DCSS team in the final that they'd already beaten in the tournament, 62-50. In the final, North Peace was leading 49-44 to start the fourth, and seemed poise to win gold at home. However, Dawson Creek made a run to take the lead, and once again down 57-54, and hung on for the decisive 63-58 win. It was a thrilling game with both teams playing hard-fought, defensive basketball.

For the girls, this is their second tournament win in the last two weekends. Both teams are headed to Prince George for a tournament next weekend.
