NWJHL suspends regular season

The North West Junior Hockey League announced Thursday that it is suspending all regular season games due to Covid-19.

A post on the league's website reads, "Due to the provincial restrictions issued on Nov. 24, the NWJHL is pausing all league sanctioned games until hockey is permitted to safely resume."

The league's four Alberta teams were scheduled to play this weekend, including the Fairview Flyers and County of Grande Prairie Kings, which were set to play their first games after a delayed to start the season due to their respective communities being placed under "enhanced" public health status to control the spread of the virus.

New restrictions announced by the Alberta government on Nov. 24 prohibit all social gatherings, events and festivals.

The league's two B.C. teams — the Fort St. John Huskies and Dawson Creek Junior Canucks — were scheduled to play against each other last weekend, but those games were cancelled after new provincial health restrictions were enacted.

While B.C. hasn't banned all sporting events, it has prohibited sports teams from travelling to other communities for games or practices, preventing the teams from playing.

The NWJHL said it will develop a plan to return to play when games are permitted to continue.
