Senior Games Society comes together for golf tournament

After months of not being able to gather, 30 members of Zone 12 from the 55+ B.C. Senior Games Society played in a fun, non-competitive golf tournament at Lake Point on Monday, July 20.

Golfers from Fort St. John and Tumbler Ridge participated in the tournament, organized by Zone 12 Director Annette Reader with help from Shirley Kinnis.

"Everybody enjoyed it. We haven't had much nice weather all summer so it was very nice to be together and you coud hear lots of people laughing," said Heather Bickford, secretary for Zone 12.

"People haven't been able to do a lot of stuff, and it's really great for everyone to be able to see each other and know they're healthy. It's hard when you're used to getting together twice a week, to all of a sudden not see each other at all."

The society also held a BBQ last week, with 25 members socializing and spread out on a farm.

The tournament was a much needed activity. The 2020 55+ B.C. Games scheduled for Richmond in September have been cancelled. As a result, there's little opportunity for people to compete together, and Zone 12 has gone from 132 members to just 45 this year.

"We don't want to lose our membership, but there isn't the same drive to be a member with no games going on," said Bickford.

Zone 12 is currently planning on a fun pickleball tournament for its next group activity.
