Sidney Bennie followed up her strong first day at the Canadian Youth Long Track Championships in Red Deer (she won the silver in the 7 Lap Mass Start race) by taking it up a notch and winning two golds. On Sunday, February 9, Bennie, 14, won gold in both the 1,500m and 500m distances. She also finished fifth in the 300m Mass Start, giving her enough points to win her age group.
This was a huge accomplishment for Bennie, who a year ago finished second in her age group at the Age Class Nationals.
Jack Hanson also medaled at the meet, winning bronze in the Team Pursuit. He finished ninth overall in the 14-year-old boys age group, finishing 7th as well in the 500m and 1,500 races.
Bennie and Hanson were joined by Elks teammates Matthew Mitchell, Austin MacGregor and Cheyanne Key in Red Deer.
Mitchell, 13, and MacGregor, both finished 12th in their respective age groups. Key finished 14th in her group.
Mitchell, MacGregor, Key, along with Emma North, will represent the Elks at the B.C. Winter Games.
