Sidney Bennie and Hannah North are the newest members of the Fort St. John Elks Speed Skating Club to earn their Team B.C. suits, aloowing them to wear the suits and compete in national competitions. With the two new provincial members, the Elks now have seven skaters who have earned their B.C. suits and will compete at Canada Cup #1 in Fort St. John, December 6 to 8.
To earn a suit, skaters must meet certain standardized times for specific distances at certain meets, as set out by Speed Skating Canada. Bennie and North join teammates Amanda Mitchell, Nick Guliov, Josh Telizyn and Brooke Braun, who earned their suits and previous years, and new teamate Kieran Hanson, who moved from Prince George to Fort St. John this year. In past years, the Elks have only had three to four skaters with their B.C. suits each year, but seven is a new high for the club.
The Elks are expecting around 100 skaters at the national competition, which will take place at the Pomeroy Sport Centre. Skaters will come from all over B.C., Calgary, the East Coast, and Ontario, among other places.
