U11 Girls Strikers win silver at Family Day Cup

The Fort St. John Soccer Club Northern Strikers U11 Girls team competed in the SWSFC Family Day Cup in Edmonton, Feb. 16 to Feb 18. This was the first tournament for the newly established team, and they demonstrated great team spirit and sportsmanship in four games during three days.

Even though the team lost the first game to SW Sting FC 08 (Tetteh-Wayoe) on Saturday, Feb. 16, the team won the second game against SW Sting FC 09 (Morra) with a convincing score of 5-2, which put the team into the second place in Pool A.

On Sunday, the Strikers played the Sting 09 team again for the chance to advance into the final. The girls suffered great challenges from this well established Edmonton team and the stress from their supporters, but managed a 4-4 tie to take the game to a shootout. The most exciting moments came during the shootout as the Strikers beat the opponent three goals to zero. Goalie Sophie Adams stopped all three shots she faced and the Northern Strikers players scored every time. We couldn't have had a more perfect shootout than this.

The team did not win the last game against a higher-tiered opponent. However, the team never gave up in the final and fought until the last second. In the end, the team received a silver medal and Marti Kielo was the tournament's top scorer with eight goals. Elizabeth Bojczuk scored three goals on the weekend and Adams had one as well.
