Balderston wins Mile Zero Cash Spiel


Dawson Creek hosted its Mile Zero Cash Spiel over the weekend and over two -dozen teams from all over the Peace Region (and beyond) came to the Dawson Creek Curling Rink from Nov. 22 to 24.

As part of the Pomeroy Inn & Suites Peace Curling Tour, the Mile Zero Cash Spiel saw 31 teams in two divisions, the SunLife Financial Competitive Division and the 2013 Encana Challenge Division, vie for top spots over three days.

Winning the SunLife Financial Competitive Division was Team Kurt Balderston of Sexsmith, who defeated Team Daylan Vavrek of Dawson Creek 6-3 in the final on Sunday afternoon.

Team Doug Small of Grande Prairie defeated Fort St. John's Team Glen Godberson 9-5 to win the 2013 Encana Challenge Division.

In the Peace Curling Tour standings, Vavrek leads with 31 points after competing in the Mile Zero Cash Spiel (10), the Stonebridge Hotel Curling Classic Grande Prairie Cash Spiel (6) and the Ryhason Contracting Tidy Trucking Cash Spiel in Fort St. John (12).

Team Balderston currently sits in third place with 24 points.
