Morrison in Kazakhstan for World Cup #3

Fort St. John speed skater Denny Morrison is in Astana, Kazakhstan alongside 10 other members of Speed Skating Canada's World Cup long track team, as they prepare to compete in the ISU Essent World Cup #3 this weekend.

Morrison finished with a top place of 11th at World Cup #1 in Calgary, followed by two top-five performances in Salt Lake City on Nov. 16 at World Cup #2.

Improving with each event, Morrison could place on the podium this weekend.

"It [was] his best placing since his injury last season," said Speed Skating Canada's long-track program director Sean Ireland about his fourth and fifth finishes last weekend.

"It was good to see him return to a very high level of performance this weekend that again puts him close to medal contention."

Morrison posted a photo of Astana, Kazakhstan on Instagram on Wednesday that highlighted the city's smog.

"Ahhhhh, breathe it in! Astana," he joked.

Morrison is set to race in the 1,000 and 1,500 m this weekend, and former Fort St. John resident Kaylin Irvine will also be representing Canada in the 500 m and 1,000 m.

Irvine had a 19th and 20th place finishes in Salt Lake City, but finished eighth in the 500 m at World Cup #1.

The ISU Essent World Cup #3 runs Nov. 29 to Dec. 1 at the Ice Palace Alau in Astana.
