Saanich man mistaken for Hillary Clinton’s running mate

As the U.S. vice-presidential debate Tuesday night put the spotlight on Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton’s running mates, a Saanich man has seen how a case of mistaken identity can draw him into the dramatic election.

Tim Kane, a Saanich businessman who ran as a Liberal candidate for the Saanich-Gulf Islands riding in the 2015 federal election, has received messages on his political Facebook page from Americans who think he is Democratic vice-presidential nominee Tim Kaine.

“It’s a little surprising how many people write to me on Facebook thinking that I’m the candidate for vice-president of the USA. Some of them are big supporters and others are less than polite. It’s a bit funny and I am having some fun with it,” Kane wrote on his Facebook page.

Barbara Bedsole from Alabama sent a message encouraging Kane to go hard Tuesday against Republican vice-presidential nominee Mike Pence.

“Hit him hard. Hate Trumpy!!” she wrote.

After the debate, Robin Smith wrote: “Congratulations for staying on the issues. God bless you!”

A man from Maryland called Kane “a liar just like nasty Clinton. Scum, your party and your media.”

In an interview with the Times Colonist, Kane said his response to people is simple: “Remember team, there’s no ‘i’ in Kane.”

Kane, who hopes Clinton wins the election, said he’s surprised people who visit his page haven’t noticed the Canadian flags.

A friend of Kane sees a brighter side to the mix-up.

Rick Doyan wrote: “Look at this way … you might have a nice house to move into in Washington in January!”
