There were 14 new cases of COVID-19 reported in the Northern Health region over the weekend.

In her biweekly briefing on Monday, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said the total number of cases in the Northern Health region increased to 303, up from 299 on Friday.

Five people in the north were hospitalized with the disease, Henry said – the same number that was reported by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control on Friday.

"I know many people, including myself, are concerned about the amount of transmission. We can all influence that," Henry said. "The main source of transmission now is when we socialize with others. The best thing we can do is to take a step back from our social interactions right now."

Since the last public update on Friday, there were 267 new cases of COVID-19 in B.C., Henry said, bringing the province's total since the start of the pandemic up to 8,908.

Throughout B.C. there were 69 people hospitalized with COVID-19, including 22 in intensive care.

There were 1,302 active cases in B.C. as of Monday, Henry said. The number of active cases in the north wasn't provided. On Friday, the B.C. Centre for Disease Control reported 45 active cases.

Over the weekend there were three new deaths related to COVID-19 in B.C., bringing the province's death toll from the pandemic to 233 – including two people in the Northern Health region.

With Thanksgiving approaching, Henry urged B.C. residents to celebrate and be thankful closer to home in their own family groups.

"It isn't easy to say 'no' to friends and family. Now is our time to support each other by keeping our connections small," she said. "It's on all of us. We can't get complacent anywhere in British Columbia."
