While Canadians have become accustomed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's daily COVID-19 updates, they seem to be getting fewer and farther between. Saturday's daily press conference which usually consists of updates from Trudeau and Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam was cancelled as the prime minister, his ministers and health officials take a rare break. Trudeau has only missed two other daily briefings during COVID-19, the first being Easter Sunday and the second being last Sunday.
While this is the first Saturday update Trudeau has entirely skipped, recent updates on Thursday and Friday had COVID-19 in the background and focused on news of new gun restrictions and the crash of a Canadian forces helicopter that left one dead and five missing and presumed dead.
The break in daily announcements comes as some provinces begin to slowly reopen their economies and start the lift some of the public health restrictions that were put in place. Tam will post her daily COVID-19 update online with the number of deaths and new infections. Daily briefings are set to resume Sunday May 3.
